2008 PFLAG Car Wash: Hate Crimes Act + ENDA

October in LGBTQ+ History Month: Brazos Valley History

In the summer of 2007 the Brazos County Chapter of Parents, Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) held a Car Wash in conjunction with Friends Church, UCC; Texas A&M GLBTA, GLBT Professional Network, and local allies, including members of the Brazos Progressives and Cora Cadette.

The car wash raised awareness of two pieces of legislation making their way through Congress in Washington, D.C. at the time

  • The Matthew Shephard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act
  • The Employment Non-Discrimination Act

Participants drove their vehicles into Friends Congregational Church, UCC Parking lot and while they had their car washed, we asked to support the two pieces of legislation by filling out notecards that were then sent to elected officials representing the Brazos Valley in Washington, D.C. (like Chet Edwards)

Lots of fun, some awareness raising, and some community bonding…all while advocating for LGBTQ+ locally and beyond.
